On this. I still think we should give special emphasis to winter sports during the first quarter in connection with the Winter Olympics and the St. Louis figure skating championship.--Ipigott (talk) 13:42, 20 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello folks, Here's the structure for March 2026. Thanks in advance for working on this together. WomenArtistUpdates Ipigott, Rosiestep, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, Curbon7, TheResilientEngineer, Grnrchst, TSventon, Oronsay, DaniloDaysOfOurLives, Alsoriano97 --Rosiestep (talk) 14:49, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    I've started on the invite. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:56, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Rosiestep. Could we please advertise the WP:MAR26 Unreferenced article backlog drive? The sign up is here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced articles/Backlog drives/March 2026/Participants Always great to have participation from Women in Red members. TOTM suggestion #1: Instead of using weasel words like "some people believe…," you should cite sources to help readers know who believes what, and why. (this is a paraphrase of this.) --Rosiestep (talk) 15:10, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I have created pages for the three new events but text and redlists need to be added. I added Artemisia Gentileschi's self-portrait to #366, Artworks. Should we reuse last year's artist logo for ##365 and the invitation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oronsay (talkcontribs) 08:25, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Oronsay for creating them! I support reusing it; it's lovely. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:18, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I will take Alphabet run: Countries starting with C. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add the artist logo and work on Artists+Activists. Oronsay (talk) 00:24, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It's been a while since I've worked on an event and I'm familiarising myself with the new process/structure. Is there any way we can edit the text in the event infobox for a specific event? I ask because some of it doesn't really make sense for Works by Women: Artworks (e.g. instructions to add the biography template to any articles created). That said, I don't think it's a big deal, if it's not really doable without huge hassle. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 23:38, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
TOTM suggestion #2. Interested in improving (not creating) artist biographies? Look for them here: Category:Artist stubs. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:52, 20 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see you back, @Chocmilk03. I don't know if it's possible to remove Biography, but I was able to add WikiProject Women artists which is relevant to artworks, not just bios. Oronsay (talk) 03:39, 20 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
There are a couple of Tip Of The Month suggestions in this section. Shall we go with one of them? More are welcome, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 10:36, 23 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
As a tip of the month for March (or possibly for later months) I suggest: Those experiencing difficulties with new articles can find guidance in our essays, perhaps starting with our Ten Simple Rules- I think this is important as recently we have had over a hundred WiR articles at AfD. Otherwise, Rosiestep, everything looks good to me.--Ipigott (talk) 14:29, 24 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ipigott - Thanks for writing on my talkpage as I did not get this ping, and I don't know why. I think the tip you're suggesting makes sense. Let's go with it. --Rosiestep (talk) 09:09, 25 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks everyone for pulling together for our March events. Everything looks okay now per Ipigott's final review so I'll send out the invites. --Rosiestep (talk) 09:16, 25 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

More potentially useful lists I've been keeping handy, happy to share (no promises about notability, but each list has at least some blue-linked names):

    -Penny Richards (talk) 20:03, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

It's also a good time to go back to our own past articles and see if any redlinks are still redlinks. I could probably make a list of those that would last me a year. Penny Richards (talk) 20:07, 25 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
That would be super duper Penny Richards! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:53, 4 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of places I'll be looking for redlinks, in addition to my own past articles:
As a side note, looking back at previous articles has made me realise that I have a bit of a habit of not redlinking women who don't have Wikipedia pages (I guess because the red feels slightly untidy?). Going to have to start rectifying this! Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:16, 4 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I had the same aesthetic problem for a long time. But then I saw an interview with an editor (don't remember who, sorry!) who said that they really didn't feel like an article was complete without at least one redlink. That redlinks are Wikipedia's way to invite further improvements. So now I try to make that happen more often. Penny Richards (talk) 02:56, 5 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
And an additional side-note, @Lajmmoore and @Penny Richards, I wonder if the proposed title might make people think it's about formal women's networks like Zonta, art collectives etc? I wondered about something like "Cascade Challenge" or "Cascading Women" instead, or "Connected Women"? Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:22, 4 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe--but the goal (as with all our editathons) is just to get good articles written, not to enforce any specific interpretation of the theme. If someone feels moved to write about notable women who knew each other through clubwork or sports, or reviewed each other's art exhibits, or were in the same cast on Broadway, I'd say cool, all that works too. Penny Richards (talk) 02:56, 5 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Being bold and shifting from March to April as March is full. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:43, 18 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Penny Richards: Thoroughly in agreement; my suggestion was just around the title of the edit-a-thon, to ensure that people don't think the theme is more limited than is intended. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:30, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree that "Women's Circles and Networks" to me reads more as for writing about organizations, social groups, etc. I also prefer either the "Cascading" wording to make the snowball idea a little clearer, or "Connected women" (which may be the more open-ended wording we'd want, since it could still fit in with teams or groups). - Whisperjanes (talk) 02:30, 26 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Orphaned women

    [edit]

What do you think about clearing up the backlog of Category:Orphaned articles? PetScan (here's query) shows there is currently 6501 articles about women what no other article links to. Ross's gull (talk) 13:24, 6 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Ross's gull: I like this idea. We've run Find Her in the past, which could serve as a sort of template - but maybe with more of a focus on de-orphaning articles. Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:33, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    (NEW) Religion

    [edit]

I thought we could consider reviving the 2024 initiative on religion and celebrate it in May, which marks the first anniversary of Leo XIV's papacy, when Jews celebrate Shavuot, Buddhists celebrate Vesak, and Muslims celebrate the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah. What do you think? Thanks and best regards. _-_Alsor (talk) 22:18, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I'm supportive of this. Suggest we align it to match up with the scope of WikiProject Women in Religion: scholars, activists and practitioners in the world's religious, spiritual and wisdom traditions. @Rosiestep, the Women in Religion WikiProject would be happy to help! It may even coincide with the publication of our newest volume of biographies, which is about women of non-traditional faith traditions. I'm sure that @Dzingle1 can tell us more about the exact publication date. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:56, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Volume 4 will hopefully be on its way to publication by May. The working title is Women Challenging Dominant Religious Practices and Expectations through Women-centered Traditions and Spiritualities. Let me know if you need more information. Dzingle1 (talk) 22:21, 19 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    (NEW) Judiciary

    [edit]

Lately, I have been creating biographies of female judges, and I think it would be interesting to dedicate a monthly initiative to female judges, lawyers, and prosecutors. Although women are very well represented in this sector, and in some countries they are almost in the majority, this is not usually reflected in the high courts, which are very male-dominated spaces. As a result, the few women who are there, especially from non-Anglo-Saxon countries, do not have biographies. To propose a date, 17 July is World Justice Day, which commemorates the date on which the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court was adopted. I would be delighted if it were done earlier. The last time an initiative on justice took place was in February 2023. Thanks and best regards. _-_Alsor (talk) 23:31, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

July is currently unscheduled subject wise. I think this is a great topic! Would you be willing/able to lead the month of July?
Potentially we could roll this in with the idea of Villains listed above and do "Crime and Punishment"? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 12:23, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@TheResilientEngineer Your proposal is fantastic! Perhaps the title could be "Crime and Law", so that we also cover constitutional justice, but I like it either way. It would be the first time I've led a month, and I'm committed to doing it, but I'd appreciate your help on how to go about it. Thank you! _-_Alsor (talk) 14:34, 7 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @TheResilientEngineer hope everything is fine. I have created this subpage on my user account where I have been compiling a list of female judges and magistrates, both practising and retired, which I believe can be used for the initiative to make it a little easier to find subjects for whom to create articles. I will continue to expand it. _-_Alsor (talk) 22:25, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Works by Women

    [edit]

Just moving the link for this idea across, in nutshell there was a proposal for quarterly focuses, but I think that got lost. We could still do a n month for each. I suggested (but also forgot I suggested) these categories: Quarter 1 = Visual arts (painting, sculpture, textiles, architecture, prints, ceramics, fashion, design, New media art, video games) Quarter 2 = Performance (music, dance, drama, opera, film, television) Quarter 3 = Textual Works (fiction, non-fiction, scholarly works, poetry) Quarter 4 = Scientific Works (inventions, equations, naming species, etc. - might need some help with some lists?)

On relfection, and looking at the structure that was already put in above, it would be something like:

    • February - Music, theatre, opera, etc.
    • March - Works by Women series: Works of Painting and Sculpture
    • April - Works by Women series: Written Works
    • May - Scientiftic works

If editors like it, maybe it could be quarterly in 2027 Lajmmoore (talk) 20:10, 24 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

    Revolutionary women

    [edit]

Hey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. I can try putting together a red list for it, perhaps we could do it some time next year? --Grnrchst (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Grnrchst I think this should go on the agenda next year. April 2025 does not have a theme attributed. Perhaps we add it to the list? When we get round to March it would be great if you can help create the event page, would you be happy to do that? TheResilientEngineer (talk) 08:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Interwiki edit-a-thon

    [edit]

I was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support! as I think it's an interesting perspective. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:10, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Alternative to Humaniki

    [edit]

Faced with the continuing problems with Humaniki (see WiR talk page), it seems to me it would be useful for this project to have an alternative approach to statistics on the proportion of biographies of women on the EN wiki. We should not be dependent on the availability of Humanity's principal creator, who is in any case usually busy with other assignments.--Ipigott (talk) 10:38, 2 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Award winners

    [edit]

I'm not seeing this in the past events (or maybe I didn't search correctly). In my own primary area of editing interest, the James Beard Awards are on the order of importance of the Oscars. Anyone who has won a James Beard Award is quite likely notable, but there are probably hundreds of not-even-redlinked women at James Beard Foundation Award: 1990s, 2010s, 2020s. For someone like Toni Tipton-Martin, the works she won the awards for were themselves notable, but they weren't even redlinked anywhere either. I'm wondering if there are other similarly major awards in other fields that are themselves a good pointer toward likely notability of the person and/or her works. Checklist for updates of virtual meetups

    [edit]

This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.

WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.

The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.

    COMING UP:
    * Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Events
    TIP OF THE MONTH:
    * When creating a new article be sure to check various spellings, including birth name, married names and pseudonyms, to be sure an article doesn't already exist. Green tickY

    • Step 1 - add details of the event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/events (see instructions at Template:WikiProject Women in Red/doc#Technical info). This will automatically update the various lists of events, and also allows editors to tag the article talk pages with {{WikiProject Women in Red}} or its shortcut {{WIR}}.
    • Step 2 - create the event page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/n where n is the number of the new event. You can use the {{WIR meetup}} header template to help you, which will populate the event header and right side infoboxes.
    • Step 3 - add the "body" of the page (welcome, redlists, purpose) using a similar editathon as a starting point. You can copy sections from previous month to add boilerplate language. For example, start at Participants copy through the bottom of the page (example). (Remember to update month and event number in the pasted sections.)
    • Step 4 - create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 366 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
    • Step 5 - create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
    • Step 6 - invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with {{ok}}
    • Step 7 - send out MassMessage notification.
